NYY v DET: Your (Quick) Need to Know…

If you’re a Yankee fan and don’t know too much about the Detroit Tigers, I got your back.

Overall, the Tigers have played well and are currently 18-13, good for in third place in the AL Central. When we dig a little deeper, we see…

They’re kind of “meh” with the bats. They’re below league average in runs per game (19th overall) and have posted a temple rubbing worthy team wRC+ of 92 in the absence of unusual batted ball numbers – they’ve earned the “not very good offensive team” label. However, keep an eye on 23-year-old left fielder Riley Greene who’s off to a great start (157 wRC+, 1.4 fWAR) after posting an underrated 2023.

Conversely, the Tigers pitching is no joke. Reese Olson and Casey Mize, who the Yanks will face tonight and tomorrow respectively, have combined for 54.2 innings with a sub three FIP, and Jack Flaherty and Tarik Skubal have been two of the best starters in MLB so far in 2024. Fortunately, the Yanks will miss Flaherty, but they’ll face Skubal – who ranks in the top ten across MLB in xFIP, fWAR, and K%-BB% – on Sunday afternoon. The rotation is backed by a solid bullpen that boasts eight relievers who’ve thrown between 11 and 19 innings, the majority of whom have very good numbers, and a defense that’s turned batted balls into outs better than all but three MLB teams. The Yanks are going to have to produce a lot of good at bats this weekend if they hope to come away with a series win.

Marcus Stroman gets the start tonight (7:05 pm), Clarke Scmidt tomorrow (1:05 pm), and Nestor Cortes closes the series out on Sunday (1:35 pm) – all three games from the boogie down will be broadcast on the YES Network.

If you like the blog and would like to see more of it, feel free to buy me a coffee – I prefer the bougee stuff but I’ll take a Wawa if you’re buying. (Shrugs.) It may not seem like much but every little bit goes a long way toward keeping the blog rolling – thanks in advance!
