Remarkably, the rain has ended, and we’re going to have hardball in the Bronx in just a little while. Here’s your need to know for the first game of the three-game set with the Texas Rangers, with all three to be played out over the next 24 hours.
The Yankees will send their ace Gerrit Cole to the mound in Game 1 of today’s doubleheader to oppose the Rangers’ Dane Dunning. Dunning is a 27-year-old lefty who’s posted a solid 3.90 FIP over 37 starts in two-plus seasons. Dunning probably won’t even reach 90 mph on the radar gun, but he does get batters to leave the zone at a pretty good rate. A sinker, slider, and change-up make up 90 percent of his arsenal and the sinker has been his worst pitch in 2022, finding middle/middle in the zone pretty often. Meanwhile, the slider and change have shown a proclivity to stay around the lower corners of the zone against both lefty and righty batters.
Today will be Dunning’s sixth start of the season, and he’s been very consistent so far not having allowed more than three runs in any one start. In the first five starts combined he’s allowed 11 runs in 26 innings with a 26/8 strikeout to walk ratio, and he’s coming off his best start of the season: Facing Atlanta on April 30th, Dunning held the reigning champs to 1 run over 7.2 innings while striking out seven with no walks issued.
Meanwhile, Cole will also be making his sixth start on the season and the last two have been very good, as he didn’t allow a run in either start over a combined 12.2 IP. It should go without saying, it’s going to be very hard for the Yankees to succeed this season without Gerrit Cole doing Gerrit Cole things, so let’s look for an ace-like performance this afternoon to set the Yanks off on another winning streak.
