The Yankees look to rebound from last night’s tough loss in Chicago this afternoon as they take on the White Sox in the finale of their four-game set. Both teams’ lineups have formidable challenges ahead of them today as the Yankees will send Nestor Cortes to the hill while the Chi-Sox counter with 26-year-old, hard-throwing righty Michael Kopech.
Kopech is a former first-round pick of the Red Sox who went to Chicago in the Chris Sale trade, and in what’s his first season as a full-time starter, he’s off to a great start. He’s made six starts in 2022, throwing 29 innings and yielding only three earned runs and 15 hits, while fanning 30. His expected stats show that he’s been very good at generating weak contact as he currently resides in the top quarter of the league in xBA, xSLG, xERA and xwOBA. (Although his expected ERA of 2.89 and xFIP of 4.27 are not nearly as good as his actual numbers.)
Kopech is a hard thrower who throws a four-seamer almost two-thirds of the time and usually throws it up in the zone. A slider and a curve make up the rest of his arsenal, and he’s shown much better command with the former so far this season.
The Yankees will counter with their not-so-secret weapon, Nestor Cortes. Cortes is coming off his best start as a Yankee against Texas last Monday when he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning against Texas while striking out 11. Saying it was his best start as a Yankee is a mouthful as he’s been great since joining the Yankees rotation for good last July 4th. Since then, Nasty has posted the eighth-best K-BB% among AL pitchers while accumulating the 12th most fWAR.
Kopech’s first pitch will be at 2:10 PM, EDT. You can catch the game on the YES Network, NBCS-CHI, and MLB.tv. If you’d rather listen, John and Suzyn will have the call on WFAN 101.9/660. As always, you can follow along with me @mybaseballpage1 on Twitter and on the “My Baseball Page” on Facebook.
The beginning of a new winning streak would be a great way to end the weekend Yanks!
