20-9 Yanks Win: What You May Have Missed…

If you missed the game yesterday, you missed a lot.

Milwaukee’s three Field Goals weren’t enough to overcome the Yankees putting up a 20 (twenty) spot on the board, as the Yankees improved to 2-0 on the season, with a 20-9 win in the Bronx.

The tide turned in this game when Paul Goldschmidt hit a 413’ home run over the wall on Nestor Cortes’ first pitch of the game.

Of course, the story is going to be the nine home runs the Yankees hit, three from Aaron Judge, but there are a few things to note:

Yesterday’s 20 run explosion was not luck – Yankees batter’s simply vaporized baseballs all day long. 13 times yesterday a Yankee hit a ball over 100 mph (nine were over 107 mph) and another five over 95 mph.

That said, the pitching was bad – Max Fried allowed 9 baserunners in less than five innings and only got 9 swings and misses on 94 pitches. The defense was worse – your batters aren’t going to see BP pitching every day, so the pitching and defense need to be better, quite obviously.

Oswald Peraza smoked a 109.2 mph line drive that went over the left field wall for a home run. Anthony Volpe has exactly 1,300 big league PA and has never hit a ball that hard. The fact that Peraza was a top 60 prospect across MLB, and the Yankees third highest prospect, at a time when IKF was ice skating around the shortstop position in 2022 but never got a serious look at short was absurd. Then entering 2023, Peraza was overlooked again as Volpe was handed the job – which he quite obviously wasn’t ready for. Since then, the Yankees have watched Volpe go through extended stretches of being overmatched and the team still doesn’t have a third baseman – but Peraza still has never been given a six-week run of playing time, which should be a fireable offense for whoever has made that decision.

(Oh, by the way – if you’re thinking “maybe the Yankees know he’s just not that good”, then that means they should have traded him two years ago when he had a very high value.)

The Yanks and Brewers are going to tee it up again today in the Boogie Down at 1:35 pm. Marcus Stroman looks to put his disastrous 2024 behind him as he’ll toe the slab for the Pinstripes and the Yanks will take their hacks against Milwaukee’s Aaron Civale.
