Yankees @ Pirates, and Some Random Thoughts

The Yankees wrap up their weekend series in the Steel City today before heading out to Detroit for a three game set there. Will Warren will be on the bump in the road grays, and the Bombers will be taking their hacks against old friend Andrew Heaney.

As a Yankee, Heaney was awful, somehow managing to yield 13 home runs in 35.2 innings during his brief stay in the Bronx. Since then, he’s been essentially a league average pitcher and picked up a ring in 2023 with the Texas Rangers. He’s coming off a decent start against the Marlins on March 30th in which he allowed only one run in five innings but took the “L” anyway.

There aren’t many surprises with Heaney – he’s going to throw a lot of four seamers and sliders and many of them are going to be over the middle of the plate.

It’s an important start for Warren as he’s yet to yield the results that his stuff suggests he should be getting. He had an OK start against Arizona on April Fools Day, but as usual, the command just wasn’t there – a combination of wildness that led to four walks in five innings, yet with a heat map that showed many center cut pitches. Perhaps today against the Pirates, who’ve been one of the worst offensive teams in baseball so far in ’25, Warren can get an “A” game and a “W” to get some positive momentum going.

You can watch the game on YES, first pitch, 1:35 pm.

Random thoughts and observations from the past two games:

There have been 64 MLB games this season in which the starting pitcher posted a game score higher than 61 – none of them were Yankees.

As I’ve said previously, I’ve never been convinced that Cody Bellinger is a better baseball player than Trent Grisham.

On Friday night, Michael Kay told us that Paul Goldschmidt “has some speed”. Fact check: Goldschmidt ranked in the 23rd percentile in sprint speed across MLB in 2024.

Ben Rice has been hitting the ball hard in 2025. Only Aaron Judge has a better average exit velocity and expected SLG among Yankees.

If you like the blog and would like to see more of it, feel free to buy me a coffee. I prefer the bougee stuff, but I’ll take a Wawa if you’re buying. (Shrug.) It may not seem like much, but every little bit goes a long way toward keeping the blog rolling – thanks in advance!
